What distinguishes a Samurai?

The army consisted of Samurai officers (Taisho), Samurai and soldiers on foot (Ashigaru).
The Samurai protected himself by a costly armour. A Samurai officer could be recognized
by an even more splendid armour with a more lavishly decorated helmet.
